Snowflake Sugar Cookies

Where would holiday cookies be without the classic sugar cookie cut out? We love the addition of a tiny bit of almond extract in this recipe – it adds a subtle flavor that sets these cookies apart from the rest. Find yourself the cutest snowflake-shaped cookie cutters and put on your santa apron, because it’s time to bake some deliciousness!

Sugar Cookie Recipe

  • 3 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 ½ cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract

In large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Cut in 1 cup butter with a pastry cutter or fork until mixture is crumbly. In a separate bowl, beat eggs. Gradually add sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla and almond extract, beating until fluffy. Add to flour mixture in large bowl. Stir by hand until dough forms. Divide into 3 portions, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate 1 hour.

Heat oven to 375° F. On lightly floured surface, roll out one ball of dough at a time to 1/8-inch thickness. Keep remaining dough refrigerated. Cut with cookie cutters and place 1 inch apart on greased cookie sheets. Bake for 7 to 12 minutes or until edges are light golden brown. Immediately remove from cookie sheets and cool on wire racks.

While the cookies cool, whisk up the icing.

Easy Icing

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla
  • ¼ teaspoon almond extract
  • 1-2 tablespoons milk

Whisk all ingredients together until smooth, adding more milk as needed to thin icing. Once cookies are completely cool, frost a thin layer of icing. Once the first layer is set, use a piping tool to create designs on the cookies.
