Smoothies & Juices to Kickstart Your New Year

With a new year comes New Year’s resolutions—hit the gym, spend less time on your phone, read more, cook more. No matter what your resolution is, fresh smoothies and juices are a great way to kick off 2019 on a high note! Whip out your blender and add these smoothies to your breakfast rotation this year.

Making smoothies is all about feel—though you can follow a recipe, try to eyeball the measurements of the ingredients (less dirty dishes) and use your best judgement. Follow your tastebuds and you’ll learn as you go!

A few smoothie-making tips:

-Buy very ripe bananas next time you’re at the grocery store. Peel them, break them in half, and freeze in a big ziplock. You’ll have cold, creamy smoothies without ice that water them down.
-Always add your liquid first. This keeps things flowing well. If you’re out of milk, water works just fine.
-Subs are the key with smoothies—use any milk, nut butter, and protein powder you have on hand. Play around with what you’ve got.
-The options are endless—add in a little cold brew for some caffeine, honey or maple syrup if your banana isn’t ripe yet, a teaspoon of maca powder, moringa or chaga for a boost, or coconut oil for some creaminess.

Blender Green Juice

(Makes about 4 servings)

Ingredients
-1½ cups water
-2 cups kale (we like dinosaur)
-2 apples, cored and roughly chopped
-½ cup parsley leaves
-1 medium cucumber, quartered
-2 celery stalks, roughly chopped
-1 1-inch piece of ginger, peeled
-Juice of 1 lemon

Instructions
1. Add all ingredients into your blender in the order they’re listed.
2. Blend on med-high until it looks and sounds smooth, about 1-2 minutes.
3. If you want pulp in your juice, pour away! If you want it a smoother consistency, pour your juice through a fine mesh strainer, pressing down with a spatula to extract all the liquid

Turn your green juice into a spiked green cocktail for some happy hour fun! For every three ounces of green juice, add one ounce of a liquor of your choice—we like gin, but vodka, rum, whiskey, or any liquor will do. Serve over ice and garnish with an element of the green juice like a lemon wedge, a parsley sprig, or a celery stalk. If you want your juice a little sweeter, add some fresh squeezed orange juice or a dash of honey.
