Story

This dinner is inspired by beef and broccoli, one of our all-time favorite Chinese takeout dishes. Here, tender steak slices are stir-fried with green beans, sweet peppers, ginger, and garlic. A simple and flavorful seasoning of oyster sauce, soy, and rice wine vinegar makes for saucy perfection that’s extra tasty over hearty brown rice. Why order in when you can do it better yourself?

Cooking Steps

    Bring a medium pot of water to a boil over high heat. Mince garlic. Trim and discard skin of ginger and mince. Rinse green beans and trim ends. Rinse sweet peppers and using a knife tip, remove seeds, then thinly slice crosswise. Pat steak dry with paper towel.
  2. Cook Rice

    Cook Rice

    Add salt generously to pot of boiling water. Stir in rice and cook until tender, about 10 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  3. Sear Steak

    While rice cooks, heat ½ of sesame oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Season steak all over with ½ teaspoon kosher salt and pepper as desired. When oil is shimmering, add steak and sear until just browned on outside, about 1 minute per side. Remove from pan and set aside to rest for about 5 minutes.
  4. Stir-Fry Vegetables

    Stir-Fry Vegetables

    Wipe pan from steak clean and add remaining sesame oil over medium-high heat. When oil is shimmering, add garlic, ginger, green beans, and sweet peppers and cook, stirring, until softening, about 5 minutes. Stir in pine nuts and toast until golden and fragrant, 2-3 minutes. Meanwhile, whisk together oyster sauce, rice wine vinegar, and soy sauce in a small bowl to make stir-fry sauce.
  5. Stir-Fry Steak

    Cut steak against the grain into ¼-inch slices and add to pan with vegetables over medium heat, along with stir-fry sauce. Cook, stirring, until steak is medium rare and sauce is thickened, 1-2 minutes. Remove pan from heat. Taste and add salt and pepper as needed.
  6. Plate Stir-Fry

    Taste rice and add salt and pepper as needed. Top with stir-fry and enjoy like your favorite takeout dish.
