Ask Plated: What Are Tartines?

Not sure what tartines are? Wonder no more.

French in origin, tartine literally means “a slice of bread.” This open-faced sandwich tends to showcase the quality of the toppings by giving them a stronger spotlight. While the traditional tartine refers to a slice of bread topped with spreadable ingredients like butter and jam or other preserves, nowadays, toppings tend to range widely—making this simple dish a blank canvas for whatever the heart desires.
