When it comes to pizza, it’s hard to go wrong. From personalized pies to thin slices and crazy toppings, the options are endless. In the Plated Test Kitchen, though, we don’t stop there. Our love for pizza dough knows no bounds, and we spend precious hours coming up with new and exciting ways to use it (much to the delight of everyone at HQ!). We decided to highlight some of our absolute favorite non-traditional ways to use this magical ingredient. It’s so versatile, you might find yourself keeping frozen pizza dough in your kitchen for whenever creativity strikes.
When we first started rolling, slicing, and shaping pizza dough, it occurred to us: what about dessert? We love a gooey, sweet cinnamon roll, but don’t love the time it takes to make the dough. So, after some happy experimentation, we came up with this fantastic method, which is as simple as roll, slice, and bake!
The savory version of a cinnamon roll: a perfect pizza pinwheel. We channeled traditional Italian flavors by layering homemade marinara sauce and shredded cheeses atop pizza dough and rolled it right up. The dough is then sliced into rounds, sprinkled with a little Parmesan for good measure, and baked to crisp, saucy perfection.
Though a tostada usually consists of a crisp tortilla piled high with rice, beans, guac and then some, we recreated this delightful cheesy dish with…drumroll…pizza dough. We also added an Italian twist in the form of mozzarella, sautéed spinach, tomatoes, and basil.
This savory monkey bread was a highly successful test kitchen experiment, featuring a technique we’re oh-so-proud of. Pieces of pizza dough are rolled into small bowls, coated in butter and cheese, and baked in a small tin until golden brown.
You knew it was coming. If there’s pizza, there’s got to be a calzone in the mix, too. As is our specialty, we created a mashup recipe combining the pizza parlor go-to with one of our favorite comfort foods: broccoli cheddar soup. Broccoli is sautéed with garlic and crushed red pepper, then combined with ricotta and cheddar cheeses and sandwiched into pizza dough. The result is cheesy, gooey, and crisp.
Dessert and pizza in one dish is almost too good to be true. Except that it’s very true, and very addictive, especially in the form of s’mores. While we have your attention, we should probably tell you about this insane treat: the dough is topped with Nutella and marshmallows, then baked until gooey and slightly charred on top. The garnish?
