Skip the Tears:
The Right Way to Dice an Onion

Cutting open an onion typically brings tears to the eyes. However, if you aren’t in an emotional mood, Chef Elana Karp has the secret for chopping without tears: A sharp knife. With a sharp knife you can avoid releasing the enzymes, which are typically broken open (and cause tears!) when the onion is bruised with a dull knife.
