Dense and decadent, chocolate mousse is a much-loved treat that never disappoints on a restaurant menu. But, it turns out, it’s a snap to put together at home, particularly for a romantic celebration. It doesn’t have to be Valentine’s Day to indulge in an elegant dessert. We’ve included our tried-and-true base recipe, along with a few fun flavor additions. Whether you go OG, or dabble with toppings and mix-ins, you’ll have a chocolate mousse recipe mastered, and that’s what matters!
Base Recipe: Easy Chocolate Mousse
3 oz bittersweet chocolate, melted
2 egg whites
3 tablespoons sugar
2/3 cup heavy cream, whipped
Beat egg whites in a stand mixer with a whisk attachment on medium speed until soft peaks begin to form, 3-5 minutes. Slowly add in sugar. Continue to beat until firm, 10-15 minutes. Whip cream and melt chocolate.
Fold in chocolate gently to whipped cream. When eggs are firm, gently fold in chocolate and cream mixture. Refrigerate until ready to use.
Separate out for 4 different variations below:
Make it Minty
Add 1/8 teaspoon of peppermint extract to the mousse and top with crushed candy canes.
Make it Salty
Sprinkle over some large flaked salt at the top for a sweet-and-salty treat.
Make it Nutty
Stir in 1/8 teaspoon hazelnut or almond extract and top with a few chopped hazelnuts or slivered almonds.
Make it Spicy
Add 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon and 1/8 teaspoon cayenne to the mousse.
