DIY Face Masks Straight From the Kitchen

Face masks are the ultimate luxury—nothing makes your skin feel smoother and gives you those #selfcaresunday vibes. But we’re here to let you in on a little secret: getting radiant, bright skin doesn’t have to mean making a trip to the expensive beauty aisle. You have all the ingredients for a fantastic DIY face mask right in your own kitchen.

While natural foods like yogurt, avocado, and bananas are delicious to eat, they can also perform miracles on your skin. Here are our favorite at-home face masks that you can whip up in under five minutes using basic items you probably already have in your pantry.

Yogurt & Oat Mask

All you need for this inexpensive, super easy mask is plain yogurt (organic is best if you can get it) and dried oats. Combine equal parts yogurt and oats in a bowl and mix well. Apply a thick coat to your freshly washed face (make sure your hands are clean, too!) and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Make sure not to make any sudden movements—the oats don’t always want to stay put. After 15 minutes have passed, simply rinse off the mixture with warm water using either your hands or a washcloth.

Avocado, Honey & Oil Mask

This ultra-hydrating mask is perfect for harsh winter days. It’s a mashup made in heaven: the avocado hydrates the skin, the honey acts as a simple solution to treat and prevent acne, and the olive oil softens and smooths. Plus it’s incredibly easy to make. Simply mash half of a ripe avocado until its soft, then mix in 1 teaspoon of plain yogurt (preferably organic), 1 teaspoon of honey, and 1 teaspoon of virgin olive oil. Apply to your freshly washed face and let it sit for 10–15 minutes. Rinse off with warm water, then go make yourself some avo toast with the other half of the avocado.

Brown Sugar Scrub Mask

If you love the sensation of a good exfoliating cleanse, this is the mask for you. Brown sugar gently clears out your pores, while the coconut oil gives the skin a dewy glow. To make the scrub, mix equal parts brown sugar and coconut oil in a bowl and apply to your face with your fingers using a circular motion. Let the mask sit for 2–4 minutes and then rinse off with warm water. This mixture will keep for up to two weeks in a sealed container, so you can make a big batch and incorporate it more seamlessly into your skin care routine.

Banana Mask

It’s no surprise that this powerhouse fruit can do wonders for your skin. Start by slicing a ripe banana into chunks, and then mashing into a thick pulp. Add 1 tablespoon of honey and 1/4 teaspoon of fresh lemon juice, and mix until combined. Apply the face mask to your freshly washed face, and let sit for 15 minutes. Rinse completely with warm water.

Egg White Mask

Eggs aren’t only good for your brunch game! Mixing egg whites with lemon make for a powerfully effective face mask. The egg white works to shrink pores and tighten skin while the lemon brightens and exfoliates. This one requires a bit more effort than the others. First, beat an egg white in a small bowl until frothy. Add lemon juice, then apply to your face, making sure to avoid the skin around your eyes. Leave the mask on your face for 20–30 minutes, and then remove with warm water. Pro tip: you’ll definitely want to apply your regular moisturizer after using this mask, as all of that exfoliating and pore-shrinking can leave your face feeling a bit tight.
