Warm Up with This No-Fail Customizable Hot Chocolate

This recipe is for a rich hot chocolate that’s deliciously decadent as is, but also makes a great base for any addition your heart desires.

Frigid February temps might have you craving a warm mug of hot chocolate at the end of a weeknight or on a cozy Sunday afternoon. The recipe below is for a rich hot chocolate that’s deliciously decadent as is, but also makes a great base for any addition your heart desires. We’ve offered some ideas here to get you started, but feel free to let your imagination and tastebuds lead you to your perfect cup.

INGREDIENTS
1 tablespoon cocoa powder
1 cup whole milk
2 ounces semi sweet chocolate chips
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
1-2 teaspoons maple syrup
a few drops of peppermint oil and a pinch of kosher salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
a dollop of peanut butter or Nutella
a pinch of ground cinnamon and a pinch of chili powder (for Mexican hot chocolate)
a splash of booze: brandy, tequila, Bailey’s Irish cream, or bourbon

INSTRUCTIONS
1. In a small pot over medium heat, bring 1 cup milk to a simmer, steaming but not scalding, 1–2 minutes. Add cocoa powder, chocolate chips and sugar, whisking continuously, until dissolved and well combined, 2–3 minutes. Pour into a mug and enjoy.

2. Spice It Up: If you like, you can throw any one of these extras when you’re whisking your hot chocolate.
