‘Tis the Season: Chef Suz’s Charred Orange Old-Fashioned

Take your cocktail skills to the next level by creating Chef Suz’s Charred Orange Old-Fashioned.

To kick off the weekend, and to help with your holiday party planning, the next recipe we’re sharing is for Chef Suz’s Charred Orange Old-Fashioned. Even cocktail purists will enjoy the added hint of citrus in this classic drink.

Yield: 4 servings

4 white sugar cubes
2 fresh oranges
1 bottle Angostura bitters
8 ounces whiskey
Club soda or water, if desired

1. Line up 4 lowball glasses and drop a sugar cube into each one. Halve 1 orange and place cut-side down in a pan over medium heat. Allow orange to cook until lightly charred on cut sides, 3–5 minutes. Squeeze 1 squeeze charred orange juice into each glass. Add 3–4 dashes bitters to each glass, then using a muddler (or the back of a wooden spoon), muddle everything together until broken down and combined.

2. Add 2 ounces whiskey to each glass and stir vigorously to dissolve the sugar. Add a few ice cubes to each glass, and then a splash of club soda or flat water, if desired (depends how strong you like your drink!). Lightly rub the rim of the glass with the squeezed charred orange, then garnish each glass with a twist of orange peel or an orange slice from the remaining orange.

3. Drink and repeat!
